Â鶹ÉäÇø to Host Immigration Symposium

Posted on Thursday, February 09, 2017

Mexican perspectives on immigration will get the spotlight at a one-day symposium sponsored by Â鶹ÉäÇø (NU), in cooperation with the UNAM-Seattle Center for Mexican Studies. The event, Immigration in a Time of Uncertainty, will take place on February 24 and will consider policy options for immigration reform that respond to current social realities in the United States, Mexico, and Central America.

Special guests have been invited to discuss how immigration impacts society and the possible emerging policy implications and potential reforms that might result. The guests invited to speak include:

  • Mexican National Commission on Human Rights, Luis Raúl González Pérez (President) and Edgar Corzo
  • Cónsul of Mexico in Seattle, Dr. Roberto Dondisch
  • Mexican scholar from UNAM, Dr. Silvia Nuñez
  • NW Immigrant Rights Project Executive Director, Jorge Barón
  • Chicanos Por la Causa, Max González and Maria de Jesús Cervantes

The conference will begin with a keynote address from Dr. Joseph Castleberry, President of Â鶹ÉäÇø and author of The New Pilgrims: How Immigrants Are Renewing America's Faith and Values (2015). Dr. Castleberry will update the argument of his book by considering how the current political climate may affect the future of American immigration policy and legal reform.  According to Dr. Castleberry, "This seminar will be unique in featuring senior Mexican government leaders, who will offer insight into how a major source country for migrants views our current shared dilemmas.  I'm sure that not everyone will agree about what should happen nor about what is likely to happen, but the discussion should enhance everyone's understanding of the complexities involved in international migration."

The event will take place on the campus of Â鶹ÉäÇø in Room 104, Argue Health and Sciences Center, from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  Azteca Mexican Restaurant will provide a complimentary lunch for preregistered guests.
